Week 2

Week 2 started out pretty good. Harry was out of town all week in South Carolina, so besides occasional email with tasks to do, Jennifer and I were on our own with appointments.

Jennifer was in the process of moving in with her fiance so she told me she was taking Tuesday off and I would be alone in the office as well as Thursday when her mother came to help her get settled in. The fun part was when she said that they had a meeting scheduled with their biggest client at their architect's office on Tuesday, that's right I would be going alone as the rep from our office. So on Monday, Jen and I packed me a bag full of samples of tile, wallcoverings and some verre eglomise pieces from Miriam (week 1 post). She gave me the company credit card to pay for a cab ride and we rehearsed my speech.

I was on time to the 1100 Architects office the next day. They are in a super nice building along with Donna Karan, Marc Ecco, and Richard Meier's office. I made it through the meeting and when I was finished, the meeting, Mr. L told me that I did a great job, 'better than Harry' he said. By the way, this guys is insanely rich. Harry has done a job for them in NY and Florida already but the client refuses to let Harry publish these jobs since he considers it a security risk because he has so many famous pieces of art. He doesn't want people to know how much money is hanging on his walls. Crazy, right?

Thursday I got to supervise a day of pick-ups and deliveries. In New York, people pay a small fortune to companies to come to your home or office, pick up a package and take it to a destination for you. This day was mostly pick a lamp at first place, pick up mirror at second, drop off mirror and lamp at third place, pick up table and two chairs at third place and take them to fourth place. This all cost about $1000. Ridiculous, right? I had to meet the movers at a few of the places and just be there to supervise since our clients don't trust lowly working class movers to be unsupervised in their apartments.

On Friday, Jen and I got to go to a place called P.E. Guerin. It was the most amazing hardware for doors and bathroom fixtures. The store is in Greenwich Village, the greatest neighborhood in New York, and is about 120 years old. I seriously felt like I was in Olivander's from Harry Potter. I was geeking out for a minute. There store was used for Anthropologie photoshoots a couple of times. AMAZING. Here's a link to them, check it out:

Also, I saw HRK with Jen this week. Remember her, the fat Joan Rivers from week 1? She added a name to the list of names she's called me: August. Atleast it gives me something to joke about with Harry and Jen, right?

A couple of things that I got to do after work this week:

  • Tour of NBC Studios. I got to see the SNL studio! For those of you who know me well, you know it's hard for me to get through a conversation without me referencing that show. I also got to see Dr. Oz's studio, it's so tiny! They use wide angle lenses to trick the people at home. I saw a studio where some football show is filmed and we were right above Jimmy Fallon's show's studio and they were filming at the time so we got to hear the Roots play. I loved it!
  • We went to the Highline Park. So beautiful! You have to check out the link and photos!
  • I went to the Manhattan temple and got to do baptisms for the dead. The temple is so beautiful and the workers love to meet people from Utah I swear. They follow you around and are asking if you know someone like their cousin's stepmom's brother that lives in Logan. I loved being there because it felt like coming home. Such a peaceful and perfect place in a big dirty city. We walked to Magnolia Bakery for cheesecake then walked through Central Park home. It was a great night!
So that's pretty much it for week 2. I'll be posting again soon about my trip to Boston and my near death experience. Be excited.

  2. Marla,
New York is so much cooler than Times Square and like the Empire State Buillding (which by the way seems way cooler in Sleepless in Seattle, but alas is not that cool). Central Park, Brooklyn, great restaurants, and museums. It's got it goin on. I wish you could come visit but I'm excited for you to go to Morocco and come back with great stories.
